warsteiner sommer aktion im juli/august: yeah that's right its my second gig in cocoon club, my first time was in august 2007 with sven. it was really an amazing experience to play in this club, so i am really happy that you invited me back. yes you are right i think as well that my sound as developed into some a bit difference in the last 2 years. i began to get more and more influence by my old roots in house music again. mixing it up with what i took with me from making more techno and minimal influenced music the previous years, i think its in a quite different place now, which is always exciting and good for music! so, from a martinez dj set the audience in a club like cocoon can expect me to take them on a journey with strong steady beats and rhythms which are fairly rooted and inspired from chicago house. with twist of techno elements and intense build ups and break downs. i always like to take people a bit in one direction and then make the set end up somewhere completely different than expected from the start without losing the natural flow of the music and groove. so, i guess people expect pretty much anything from me, but always interesting forward thinking hypnotic electronic music which for sure make you dance! :) although you have shot to prominence recently with „le circus“, you have been producing for a number of years. can you fill us in? that's true. i started producing actually as a teenager.. i remember when i started by house and techno records from chicago and detroit back then i thought to myself, "hmm this kind of music i think i could produce.. " so i got an old e-mu esi-32 sampler and started playing around with it. i think i was about 14-15 years old then. later on it developed into more serious productions and eventually i moved more and more towards the deep house sound. in 2000 i got a record deal with the chicago based deep house label guidance recordings for 3 ep's, which i made and released with them between 2000 - 2003. after that i was more and more inspired by the 80's disco stuff & electro music mixed with more tradition tech-house. i started working on more stuff in this genre and ended up sending a demo to steve bug and he signed 3 tracks for an ep on his notorious dessous label in late 2003. then around 2004 i set up my own label called out of orbit recordings. it was an outlet for my more trippy and spacey tech-house stuff. back then me and a friend started calling this kind of music for "cosmic house" and it became sort of the main genre on out of orbit. i was quite busy with this label in the years between 2004 until 2006. in the end i felt that this sound in a way have had its time and i felt it was time to move on. after working so much with melodic tracks, i felt a strong drive and passion to make more minimalistic music. i was super inspired by people like richie hawtin's modern take on minimal techno (i mean of course his old plastikman stuff was already in my record collection and i was huge fan of those things.. ) but the current sound on m_nus was really inspiring, very warm and funky minimal tracks. i started experimenting more with this kind of music and set up a new platform for releasing it called re:connected. this label was just done for releasing my own more minimal techno stuff, the cover art were just a full photo from my dear friend and professional photograph linus eklund and the only text printed was re:connected. i choose to do it this way because i wanted to introduce this music completely fresh and not to be pre-judged by my artist name martinez, cause i though still many people had strong associations with that name and the label/sound of out of orbit. i eventually did 5 ep's and one album on re:connected. in 2008 i started hearing more and more housey vibes coming back into the current music and as i come from house music it was really inspiring for me to start messing around with influences from this music again. mixing that with what i had from the re:connected pretty much brings us up to date and it brought me to matthias tanzmann and moon harbour which i think is a perfect match for this sound. you can almost tell a martinez production without being told this is the case - are you striving to establish yourself a little sonic niche? hehe, well i don't think that i deliberate striving or working for it. i always just make whatever sound i feel like, but i definitely believe that most artists have their personal way of doing things and that this will always be something you notice. so more than i think its a niche, its more just the way i work when i am in a studio i think!
saturday at cocoonclub //   sa 04.07.2009 // tocadisco tocadisco, skai sonderveranstaltung heiß, heißer, envy my music! zu gast bei einem der heißesten events des monats ist tocadisco – der schon im vergangenen kalenderjahr mit seinem housestil das publikum im cocoonclub überzeugen konnte. die basis für seine überaus erfolgreiche karriere legte der mittlerweile in köln lebende roman boer mit seinem remix zu slams track „lifetime“ im jahr 2001, der vonn den groove-lesern zum besten remix des jahres gewählt wurde. nur zwei jahre später gelang ihm dann ein megahit: „nobody likes the records that i play“ ebnete ihm den weg in ein erfolgreiches musikerleben. schon in seiner kindheit bekam roman eine trommel und den dazugehörigen schlagzeugkurs vom vater geschenkt. daraus entstand eine musikleidenschaft, die offensichtlich bis heute bestand hat. in den vergangenen jahren produzierte der wahlkölner remixe für topacts wie m.a.n.d.y, deep dish und sogar für die titanen der dance music, die pet shop boys. 2006 folgte tocadiscos remix von the eggs “walking away“ – dieser wurde vom britischen musik- und dj-magazin mixmag zum größten dancehit gekürt. daraufhin folgte tocadiscos debütalbum „solo“ auf superstar recordings. und auch im vergangenen jahr ließ es roman wieder richtig krachen. unzählige remixe, sowie veröffentlichungen auf mixcompilations von ministry of sound, kitsune oder toolroom prägten sein jahr. heimatluft schnuppert an diesem wochenende der neukanadier skai, der für einige tage in der alten heimat weilt und es sich nicht nehmen lässt, einen tag vor dem „love family park“ im cocoonclub seine houseklänge zum besten zu geben. übrigens erhalten alle „love family park“-kartenbesitzer an diesem samstag eine eintrittsvergünstigung. micro: dj katchs delorean
in diesem jahr erwartet euch auf dem mainfloor eine ausgelassene dj-performance von marco carola, welcher noch ein paar stunden zuvor in hanau an den decks stand, gekonnt kombiniert mit dem musikalischen statement des publikumslieblings loco dice. in der lounge gibt’s die extraportion vitamine in form eines extralangen solo-sets der bestlaunigen karotte, ein wahrer experte auf dem afterhour-gebiet und versiert darin, seinem publikum die wünsche von den augen abzulesen. macht euch auf eine lange love family-nacht gefasst!

tracklisting: i, der neunte buchstabe im lateinischen alphabet, ist statistisch gesehen das dritthäufigste zeichen in der deutschen sprache. noch interessanter ist das echo des i im englischen sprachgebrauch, gibt es doch keine linguistische möglichkeit, die erste person so prägnant und kurz zu definieren. insofern ist i eben auch ich, die klangliche ausgestaltung der subjektiven ästhetik von cocoon recordings, von inspirierter elektronischer tanzmusik der moderne und der mehr als würdige nachfolger einer der erfolgreichsten compilation-serien im kontext von techno und house - wobei house diesmal offenkundig ein besonderes gewicht beigemessen wird. und so beginnt i gleich mal mit einem persönlichen debüt. der berliner tobi neumann, seit vielen jahren fest zur cocoon-familie gehörender ausnahme-dj, war als produzent/remixer bislang vorzugsweise im hintergrund für zum beispiel 2raumwohnung oder die chicks on speed aktiv. mit seinem ersten release unter dem projektnamen emt verzaubern tobi und sein partner matthew styles nun die tanzfläche mit einem warm-organischen sound, schälen über elf minuten den sommer aus dem gewand und lassen ihr "extra lunch" dank kleiner vokalfetzen und dauerstring wie eine reflektion auf einer klaren wasseroberfläche schimmern. ein toller start, gerade weil der niederländer laurens lanting aka lauhaus mit dem perkussiv bis detroit-dubbigen "back to ipanema" diesen sommer-vibe kongenial weiterführt. und wo wir schon in holland sind: jeroen verheij aka secret cinema ist seit anfang der neunziger jahre eine feste größe auf music man und dem einen oder anderen vielleicht auch als meng syndicate ein begriff. sein beitrag "kurzweil" ist so ziemlich das genialste, was in den letzten jahren von hoch harmonischem house mit piano und strings zu vernehmen war. hands in the air-garantie inbegriffen! nach diesem emotionalen furioso macht sich detroits m_nus-botschafter gaiser mit hypnotischem triphouse auf dem weg zur deepness in der reduktion. nicht die einzige personelle überraschung von i: matthew edwards' aka radio slaves heiß erwarteter erster track für cocoon gibt mit dauerfläche, pochender basskick und orgel ein grandioses wild pitch-revival, auf das selbst dj pierre stolz gewesen wäre. und timo maas lässt nach seiner tribalen endorphinhymne "subtellite" vom vergangenen jahr diesmal über elf minuten lang zu spacigem alarmsirenen-discofunk wieder jegliche selbstkontrolle verlieren. natürlich gäbe es auch zu den übrigen tracks von chymera, johnny d, green & todd oder kabuto & koji so einiges zu sagen. ist man je so überraschend auf ein völlig unkitschiges saxophon gestoßen wie beim "night"-technojazz des kanadiers guillaume & the coutu dumont? sollte man dem xylophon nicht viel häufiger das schlusswort wie beim melancholischen "dead room"-finale des hamburger kollektiv turmstraße einräumen? antworten nicht nur auf diese fragen findet ihr auf über 104 (!!!) minuten des staunens, tanzens, sich verlierens. ab nächster woche im handel

tracklisting: mit der zweiten veröffentlichung auf cocoons neu gegründeter 10-inch-serie gibt das label einen ersten vorgeschmack auf den sound, der uns im sommer 2009 zum tanzen bringen wird. den anfang macht der brüsseler geoffroy dewandeler aka mugwump, der bereits mit spirit catcher kooperiert hat und auf releases für ssr, das eskimo-sublabel suicide oder kompakt zurückblicken kann. "mindflexes" realisiert eine so noch nicht gehörte melange aus perkussiven klängen und kraft strotzendem space-discotech, der stillstand unmöglich erscheinen lässt. definitiv kein unbekannter ist hingegen der 33jährige uroš umek, der seit beginn der neunziger jahre des vergangenen jahrhunderts wie kaum ein anderer slowenien auf der internationale landkarte der elektronischen tanzmusik verortet hat. "radim haos" brilliert mit einem hoch effektiv pumpenden bass samt arabischer zitate und stellt die ausnahmestellung von umek in sachen gepflegter tanzflächenbombe wieder mehr als eindrucksvoll unter beweis. ab jetzt im handel
